ENFIELD — Reports of a strange “cow-like figure” wandering the fields and woodland around Enfield have surged in recent weeks, with residents claiming to have witnessed an “upright creature” moving through the area at dusk.

The latest sighting was captured on a mobile phone near the edge of Hilly Fields late on Wednesday, showing what appears to be a tall, black-and-white figure walking slowly toward the treeline. While the video is blurry and partially obscured by fog, several viewers have insisted the shape is “not human.”

“It was walking on two legs, but the size, the pattern… it wasn’t right,” said one Enfield resident who asked not to be named. “It moved like a person, but it looked like a cow from behind. I know how mad that sounds, but that’s exactly what I saw.”

Sightings Double in Past Month

Enfield Council confirmed that reports of the so-called “Cowman” have doubled in the last month, with several sightings occurring near the railway line between Gordon Hill and Crews Hill. Local dog walkers have also claimed unusual activity in the wooded areas just north of Forty Hall, describing “heavy footsteps,” “low breathing,” and a “large silhouette” moving between the trees.

The increase in sightings has caused concern among residents, particularly after what is now the third reported incident in a single week.

Multiple Witnesses Step Forward

One witness, a commuter walking home from Enfield Chase station, described seeing “a tall figure standing completely still” in the fog.

“At first I assumed it was someone with a backpack,” they said. “But the shape was wrong… wider, heavier, like shoulders and a large torso. When I looked again, it was gone.”

Another witness, a teenager from Botany Bay, claimed to have seen a similar figure “crossing the field in total silence” late on Sunday night.

Council Response Remains Vague

Enfield Council has been pressed for a statement after public concern continued to grow online, but officials maintained that there is “no verified evidence” of a threat.

A spokesperson added:

“We are aware of the reports and are working with local authorities to monitor the situation.”

No further details were provided.

Experts Divided

Local wildlife groups have dismissed the sightings as misidentifications, citing fallow deer, escaped livestock, or low-visibility conditions as likely explanations.

However, cryptozoology enthusiasts argue the consistency of descriptions across unrelated witnesses is “highly unusual.”

“This isn’t a one-off prank,” said Dr. Stephen Kelham, a researcher of folklore in the Home Counties. “Enfield has a long history of strange rural legends, but the clustering of these reports is rare. Something is happening out there — what exactly, we don’t yet know.”

A Growing Mystery

With the nights drawing in and fog becoming more frequent across North London, residents remain on edge. Some have begun avoiding the fields after dark, while others are actively searching for the creature, hoping to capture clearer footage.

For now, the Cowman remains part local myth, part unexplained phenomenon — and entirely unsolved.

Anyone who believes they have seen the creature is urged to report the sighting to local authorities.
